One of the cool things about RV travel is the ability to stay in different types of campsites on cross country journeys.
Do you want a nice, paved, level site with full hook-ups and lots of amenities like swimming pools, hot tubs and other recreational activities?
Do you want a beautiful view with lots of trees – but don’t really care about things like full hook-ups (electricity, water and sewer)?
If you watch enough YouTube videos on the RV community – often people tend to fall into distinct categories – and either prefer RV resorts almost all of the time or desire more rustic types of campgrounds.
We fall somewhere in the middle.
Sometimes it is nice to have all the amenities – and sometimes I just want a nice view in the morning with my fresh cup of coffee.
Yesterday in Fargo we stayed at the Lindenwood Campground – which is run by the City of Fargo. The sites were a bit uneven, the water pressure was a bit variable, and it was pretty loud – but it had nice cottonwood trees, large picnic areas with freshly mowed grass and the Red River just a few hundred yards away.
Had I stayed here before? No.
Would I stay here again? Probably.

My generation is really the first that traveled cross country in an era of franchises – where you could get similar meals or accommodations anywhere across the nation. If you go into a McDonalds in Maine – you will get the same meal you would get at McDonalds in Arizona.
Sometimes – you want something that you are used to. There is comfort in familiarity.
However, sometimes it is good to break out of your comfort zone and try something a bit different.
I feel the same about many of the RV campgrounds we stay in – sometimes it is nice to stay in a KOA – where you know exactly what you are going to get whether you are in California or Virginia. Then again – we also enjoy staying at family owned RV campgrounds some of which have been around for 40 or more years and are small seasonal businesses.
On this trip – we are staying in a mixture of both!
In Duluth, we did pick up a hitchhiker this afternoon – so we have three in our travel party!

Today was a light travel day – less than 300 miles. Even better – we will spend tomorrow exploring Duluth, MN – a city we have not been to for 25+ years.
I will have my first “eating and drinking” post tomorrow about Duluth – there is a brewery waiting for me here and I can’t wait to share my impressions!
Welcome to the trip we’ve been enjoying, Noel! (Phil Ohl)
